GSI DEVELOPS ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT FOR THE DESIGN OF THE FLUVIAL WORKS OF THE COPIAPÓ RIVER

“The EIA of the Río Copiapó River Works represents a great challenge for the environmental team of GSI and an opportunity to generate a substantial contribution to the Atacama Region, says Mario Figueroa, Deputy Manager of Environment at GSI Ingeniería”.

During the first semester of 2015, the north of our country was affected by intense rainfall that generated severe alluvium in the regions of Antofagasta, Atacama and Coquimbo. The most serious damages occurred in the Atacama region, where the alluvium generated in the basins of the Salado, Copiapó and Huasco rivers caused human losses and large-scale material damage.

Due to the above, the Hydraulic Works Directorate has deemed necessary the development of an Integral solution of the Copiapó river basin and its channel, which allows addressing the problems of alluvial control.

GSI is developing the Environmental Impact Assessment of this important project, whose extension is approximately 46 kilometers; for this purpose, it carries out the baseline studies of the various environmental components, as well as defining the relevant parts, works and actions, in order to define the environmental impacts and subsequently the mitigation, reparation and / or compensation measures.
